1990年（平成2年），秉持“制作忠实于原作的推理剧”的理念，在日本推理作家协会的协助下，以“昭和推理杰作选”为名的系列作品推出，其中一部便是《狱门岛》。此后，该系列以“横沟正史系列”的名称延续。除了固定出演金田一角色的片冈鹤太郎和饰演矶川警部的加藤武外，平干二朗和牧濑里穗每次都以不同角色作为常规演员出演，这种独特的安排很是新颖。此外，精心挑选拍摄地进行实地拍摄也是该系列的一大特色。《八墓村》属于片冈鹤太郎主演的金田一耕助系列，于1995年10月13日播出。
